Captain
Carrel Harris is the Uniform Division
Commander. The Uniform Patrol Division
is the largest division in the Amarillo
Police Department with well over half of all
police officers assigned to the division.
The patrol officers respond to calls for
service from the public and conduct the
preliminary investigation of all incidents.
The Uniform Patrol Division includes the
following squads:
- 1st Shift-Midnight shift patrol –
uniformed patrol officers working from 11
p.m. or midnight to 7 or 8 a.m.
- 2nd Shift-Day shift patrol – uniformed patrol officers
working from 7 or 8 a.m. to 3 or 4 p.m.
- 3rd Shift-Evening shift patrol – uniformed patrol
officers working from 3 or 4 p.m. to 11 p.m.
or midnight.
- 4th Shift-Evening Patrol – uniformed patrol officers
working from 7 p.m. to 3 a.m.
- COPPS – Community Oriented Policing and
Problem Solving officers on bicycles
patrolling various parts of Amarillo.
- Motorcycle squad – Uniformed officers whose
primary responsibility is traffic
enforcement.
- Traffic Investigation
Unit – police
officers who conduct investigations on DWI
cases, hit and run cases, fatal traffic
collisions, and process all traffic
collision reports.
- Parking Enforcement – a civilian employee
who enforces parking restrictions in the
downtown area.
- Handicapped Parking Patrol – civilian
volunteers who enforce handicapped parking
violations in Amarillo.
The midnight, evening, and
day shift patrols are each supervised by
four sergeants and one lieutenant. A
sergeant supervises each of the other
squads, and the sergeant reports to a
