The Amarillo Police Academy
is under the direction of the Training and
Personnel Division of the police department. The
police academy for the Basic Peace Officer
License is 1080 hours (27 weeks) and consists
of the 618 hours of instruction required by
TCLEOSE (Texas Commission on Law Enforcement
Standards and Education). TCLEOSE is the
Peace Officer licensing agency, located in
Austin, Texas, that is responsible for
licensing all police officers, sheriff’s,
sheriff’s deputies, constables, deputy
constables, fire marshals, deputy fire
marshals, jailors, telecommunication
operators and all police training facilities
in the state. Without TCLEOSE certification
a person is not eligible to become a
officer. The first 20 weeks of the police
academy prepares a police recruit to pass
the basic peace officer TCLEOSE examination.
The additional 7 weeks of the academy
involve the police department’s rules and
regulations along with a multitude of
classes to familiarize the police recruits
with what will be expected of them as police
officers. After graduation from the police
academy the new officers are then assigned
to a 16-week field officer training program.
Once this program has been successfully
completed the new officers are assigned to a
shift and can function as an independent police officer.
They will be assigned to a police unit and a
beat within the city limits of Amarillo.
