EMPLOYMENT

The Amarillo Police Department accepts applications year round for the position of Police Officer. Applications are submitted to the Amarillo Police Department, Training and Personnel Division, 200 SE 3rd Ave., Amarillo, TX 79101.

The Amarillo Police Department will be conducting an Basic Police Academy Entrance Exam on Saturday June 7th, 2008. Applications and Study Guides can be downloaded from the links listed below. The deadline to have your application turned in is Friday, May 30th at 5:00 p.m.

Amarillo Police Officer applicants must be a U.S. citizen of good character with no Felony or Class A convictions, probation or deferred adjudication; no Class B convictions, probation or deferred adjudication in the past 10 years; no family violence conviction; possess a valid Texas drivers license with a good driving record; you must have reached your 21st birthday, but not have reached your 45th birthday by the first day of the academy; must be able to read, write and speak the English language at a high school graduate level; must have normal hearing and be able to follow written and verbal instructions; must be able to work under stressful conditions and occasionally work overtime. Applicants must have a high school diploma or GED. If an applicant possesses a GED the applicant must also possess 12 hours from an accredited college with a minimum of a 2.0 grade point average. Applicants must provide copies of drivers license, social security card, birth certificate, high school diploma, GED and college transcript (if applicable) and DD-214 Member 4 form (if applicable). If you have military service you may receive 5 points preference on the Civil Service Entrance Exam.

On June 7th, 2008, we will hold the Amarillo Basic Police Officer Academy Civil Service Entrance Exam, for the 78th Amarillo Police Academy scheduled to start January 2009. The Amarillo Police Department Basic Law Enforcement Academy is currently 1072 hrs. We anticipate testing for the Basic Police Officer Academy again in January 2009, for the 79th Amarillo Police Academy that will start in June, 2009. We are no longer conducting an Accelerated Academy.

The City of Amarillo is taking applications for the position of Police Officer.  Applications should be submitted to the Training and Personnel Division of the Police Department at 200 SE 3rd (4th Floor) till 5:00 pm,  Friday,  May 30th, 2008. 

Must be a U.S. citizen of good character with no felony or Class A convictions; possess a valid Texas drivers license with a good driving record; you must have reached your 21st birthday, but not have reached your 45th birthday  by January  5, 2009.   Must be able to read, write, and speak the English language at a high school graduate level; must have normal speech and hearing, and be able to follow written and verbal instructions; must be able to work under stressful conditions and occasionally work overtime.  Must have uncorrected vision of at least 20/200, correctable to 20/20 in both eyes (eyesight between 20/100 and 20/200 must have a letter from their doctor stating eyesight is in static condition) ; must pass a written entrance exam and physical agility test. 

Must have a high school diploma or a GED with an additional 12 hours from an accredited college.  Must provide originals or certified copies of drivers license, social security card, birth certificate, high school diploma or GED and college transcript, and DD-214 member 4 (if applicable).

Salary:  $3228/month

  • Telecommunications Operator (911 Dispatcher), Police Civilian Personnel

Under supervision and in accordance with procedures, answers incoming telephone calls for police service from the public; sends and receives teletype messages concerning police inquiries and investigations; enters and extracts information from a computer; dispatches police cars using the police radio; records the activities of police officers while operating the police radio and computer. 

High school or GED is requiredMust pass telecommunication test and type 30 wpm.  Must have ability to think clearly in emergencies, clearly communicate over radio equipment and telephones and maintain friendly working relations with employees.  Prior to being accepted for this position, applicant must successfully complete a medical, psychological and polygraph exam. 

Preferred Qualifications:

Two years previous clerical experience, prior experience as a 911 Operator, data entry experience, teletype station experience, TCLEOSE Telecommunication Operator Certified, 911 certified, employed with the Amarillo Police Department 1 year or more, 1 year or more experience in law enforcement dispatching, ability to type 45 wpm, bilingual.

Salary:  $2279/month, depending upon qualifications
