The
Crime Prevention Unit provides information
for and about the Amarillo Police Department
to the news media and the general public.
Public education
concerning crime issues is an important part
of the police department’s overall response
to crime in the community. A properly
informed citizen will find it much easier to
reduce his or her risk of becoming a victim
of crime.
Public safety
presentations cover a wide variety of topics
and can be tailored to the needs of each
individual group. The following is a partial
list of safety and crime related
presentations available; Senior Safety,
Child Safety, Home and Personal Safety,
Identity Theft and Dealing With Difficult
People. We urge anyone to call with
presentation needs that are not included in
this list.
Another service offered by
the Crime Prevention Unit is the Home
Security Survey. An officer will inspect a
citizen’s home and determine if it meets the
requirements set out by the Texas Department
of Insurance to receive a certificate that
may entitle the homeowner to a reduction in
their homeowner’s insurance The amount of
reduction can be 5 to 20% and the homeowner
should also contact their insurance agent.
Regardless of the insurance reduction, the
increased security will reduce the
homeowner’s risk of becoming a victim of
crime. Many homes qualify “as is”. Many
others need only minor additions in order to
qualify. We urge you to see our list of
qualifications in the forms file or call our
office for more information. This inspection
is fast and free of charge.
NEW! TEXAS
HEAT PROGRAM
Every 5 1/2 minutes a car
is stolen in Texas. Most of these thefts
occur between the hours of 1:00am and
5:00am. You can reduce your chance of
becoming a victim of auto theft by
registering your vehicle in the HEAT
Program. Heat stands for Help
End Auto
Theft. By registering
your vehicle in the Heat program you grant
law enforcement officials the authority to
stop your registered vehicle any time during
the hours of 1:00am - 5:00am and also if the
vehicle is attempting to cross into Mexico.
More than one thousand cars were stolen in
each of the last two years in Amarillo.
If we can reduce auto theft everyone will benefit! Registration forms are
available from the Crime Prevention Unit or
you may register on-line with the
HEAT Program.
